RUS Wireless Program - Strategies for Success |

An interesting point was made by an industry consultant that I partner with today. She has deep contacts within the RUS and is communicating with them about the solutions that are winning strategies in rural markets. She said that there are concerns that wireless has two issues.
1. Fiber and other wireline technologies can offer a triple play solution to wireless double play. This reduces the risk that a government grant or loan will go into default by increasing overall gross margins on the solution.
Solution for wireless applicants - create a rich service offering that delivers additional top-line revenue without driving up infrastructure costs. The choices are many, be creative. Many times, a simple applicatoin will change the world. One good example - email.
2. There is significant concern that EVERY household in a service area be covered. Be sure that you have done clutter-based penetration analysis on your BTS infrastructure and have a mitigation strategy for areas that may be occluded.
Solution. A good example here is underlaying a 900 mHz radio system on a 3.65 WiMAX network to deliver service to customers that can't get service due to clutter issues. A clutter-based analysis will allow you to determine where these areas are early in your technology infrastructure design process. |
